Yayasan Sime Darby Awards Scholarships to Deserving Students at Universiti Tun Abdul Razak

13 August 2015

Kuala Lumpur, 13 August 2015 - Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNIRAZAK) has received a tremendous boost from Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), the philanthropic arm of Sime Darby Berhad, with RM2 million worth of scholarships for underprivileged students from the university.

Twenty three promising and underprivileged individuals from families with a monthly household income below RM3, 000 will benefit from the scholarships to pursue their academic dreams at the university under YSD’s Bursary Programme.

YSD’s four-year sponsorship until August 2019 covers tuition and accommodation fees, books and computer allowances. Scholarships are offered to postgraduate and undergraduate students pursuing critical courses in line with UNIRAZAK’s initiative to address the nation’s talent shortage, especially in the fields of accountancy, taxation and insurance.

Present at the official ceremony today to mark the collaboration between YSD and UNIRAZAK were UNIRAZAK Chancellor Tun Ahmad Sarji Bin Abdul Hamid, Sime Darby Berhad President and Group Chief Executive Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh, who is also a YSD Governing Council Member, UNIRAZAK President and Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Seri Dr. Md. Zabid Hj Abdul Rashid and YSD Governing Council members Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Wan Mohd Zahid Mohd Noordin and Datin Paduka Zaitoon Dato’ Othman.

In his speech, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Wan Zahid said education has always been the main agenda of YSD’s philanthropic initiatives and the collaboration with UNIRAZAK was in line with the foundation’s main focus to assist the underprivileged.

“We believe in providing equal educational access and opportunities to all layers of society to pursue academic excellence at various levels of education. It is our hope that this capacity enhancement programme will enable the scholarship recipients to excel and build better lives for themselves and their families through this once in a lifetime opportunity,” he added.

Meanwhile, Prof. Datuk Seri Dr. Md Zabid said the scholarships augured well for UNIRAZAK’s objective of nurturing high performing innovative leaders and entrepreneurs.

“We recognise the importance of encouraging students especially from the low-income families to relentlessly pursue fields that will fuel the country’s growth and support the Government’s efforts to improve our educational standards. A proficient and efficient talent pool is vital to build a competitive workforce in order for us to achieve a high income nation status,” said Prof. Datuk Seri Dr. Md. Zabid.

YSD offers scholarships and bursaries to outstanding and deserving young talents for vocational studies, certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate studies in local and overseas institutions. The YSD Bursary Programme assists students from the low-income families and those who are physically challenged with academic potential to pursue their tertiary education. Over the last 33 years, 2,519 students have benefitted from YSD scholarships and bursaries amounting to RM217 million.
